The second
USS Mustin (DDG-89) is an
Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer in the
United States Navy. She was named in honor of the
Mustin family.
Mustin was the first
Burke destroyer built with her funnels submerged into the superstructure, an additional stealth measure taken on the already stealthy warships.
The contract to build her was awarded to
Ingalls Shipbuilding on
6 March 1998. Her keel was laid down on
15 January 2001, she was launched on
12 December 2001, and commissioned
July 26,
2003.
Mustin is equipped with
Aegis, an advanced combat weapons system.
In July 2006,
Mustin and her crew of 300 was deployed to
Yokosuka Naval Base in
Yokosuka,
Japan, home of the Navy's 7th Fleet, for permanent assignment. Though coming at an opportune time in response to the recent
North Korea missile tests, the deployment was previously ordered, unrelated to the incidents.
